Current Information:Born-Berkshire Enlisted-Deptford On 4th December, 1915, 7th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 41 Brigade, 14th Division, went into front line trenches in the northern part of the Ypres salient at a place known as the Forward Cottage Salient, close to Wieltje. Early in the morning of 8th December, the artillery of a neighbouring division bombarded the enemy front line. That nearly always meant some retaliation and on this day it was 7th King’s Royal Rifle Corps who bore the brunt of it. Between 11am and midday some 600 shells landed on their sector. 10 men were killed, including Rifleman Herbert, and a further 23 men were wounded. That evening they were relieved and moved back to dugouts on the Canal Bank. |
